Canon PIXMA MG5300 Review– Canon PIXMA MG5300 is a classic example of an inkjet multifunctional peripheral device (MFP) designed for private use. It is a squat, intelligent looking device made from high quality black plastics. It is very well specified, too: It can print, scan and copy, automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper (duplex printing), and you can connect and share it in a wireless network.

The only slight disappointment is that there is no fax modem included, but sensible canon has included support for modern cloud-based printing services. The Canon PIXMA MG5300 can be set up to print from cloud services like Google Drive, but keep in mind that it’s not as easy as it should be the process is far more involved than it is for products from rival manufacturers.

As a mid-range device, this pixma gets Canon’s unusual five-ink print engine, combining dye-based black, cyan, magenta and yellow inks with a larger, pigment black tank for better text printing. While this is a good thing, we are disappointed that the Canon Pixma MG5300 is cumbersome with a clunky control system. Instead of touch input, the menus are navigated with a four-way rocker switch paired with three dedicated buttons under the screen we have long criticized this setup, which can be inconsistent and confusing.

The Canon Pixma MG5300 inherits another feature that we have previously criticized. Its ink cartridges are reached by raising the cantilevered control Panel, but the access is a bit limited on the back of each slot. Also, although the slots are clearly marked, it is physically possible to insert the dye-based cartridges into the wrong slot we are not sure why there is no keying to prevent this. The printer’s paper trays have an unusual layout where printed pages spill onto a stop that pans out of the input tray-it looks simple, but the neat design keeps everything clean.
